Wallets take different shapes and forms: personal and embedded wallets. Embedded wallets are continuing to grow as invisible, non-custodial wallets created on the fly specifically for a dApp as opposed to traditional personal wallets that are agnostic and external to that particular app. Humans need personal Web3 wallets. Yet, dApps want to embed a wallet, becoming themselves a wallet for their user base. This nature of the ecosystem burden the users. You still need to fund embedded wallets and their on-chain journeys become more clutter: very quickly a user will end up with tens if not hundreds of wallets and wallet public addresses with different assets spread out across tens or hundreds of public keys. 1 new app, 1 new wallet: A total mess. This talk will be on the architecture and design choices behind the Newton Protocol, a sufficiently decentralized Open Authentication protocol that unlocks composability among wallets, providing a truly "Google Sign On" experience in Web3. Newton Protocol is a "keystore layer 2 network" that stores and manages cross-chain session keys for users' ERC4337 smart contract accounts with privacy, security and auditability, so that users can use 1 universal smart wallet that manages different granular levels of permissions to each dApp's embedded wallets or other EOAs through progrommable session keys. Newton Protocol is designed as a combination of the conventional smart contract rollup architecture (but without EVM) with Farcaster-like sufficient decentralized off-chain structure in order to provide both the session key storage on-chain with programmability / auditability off-chain. With this unique architecture, Newton Protocol can provide settlement cross-chain settlement (roll down) to the L1 and other L2s within Ethereum block real-time, secured by TEE and the decentralized Newton validator network.
