A “walled garden” refers to a digital ecosystem designed to keep developers and users contained within. Blockchains offer the opposite: open platforms for innovating, interacting, and transacting. I will discuss how Ethereum's ideals of neutrality, permissionless innovation, and composability are key to creating experiences that were never possible before. I'll dig into examples of the harm caused by walled gardens in tradfi and Web 2 (from the Apple App store to Argentina's capital controls) and talk about how Ethereum has opened up a world of possibilities that weren't possible before. I'll tell this story using both personal anecdotes (like the women using stablecoins in Venezuela) and data (like the fact that 70% of Ethereum smart contracts call other contracts - demonstrating the power of "open APIs").
