Currently, multiple virtual machine (VM) frameworks exist for developers to build. The session here seeks to focus on how these different VM environments can be unified, enabling far more interaction between developers and a much more vibrant community of builders. The talk will begin with an overview of popular VM environments alongside some of their technical highlights and achievements, specially focusing on EVM, SVM and WASM. This will then transition to problems posed by the fragmented VM environments (for example: a lack of composability, siloed developer communities and an overall hindrance to the growth of crypto). Next, the talk will move into potential solutions in the space. We will delve into prominent layer one networks with the largest developer mindshares today and their VM layers (Ethereum, Cosmos and Solana). We will explore the rise of rollups and newly rising VM environments (specifically different models of EVM such as parallel EVM). Finally, the session will dive into some solutions for unifying VM layers together. Some examples of this include multi-VM rollups introduced by Injective as well as modular VM frameworks introduced by the likes of Celestia.
